In addition to the rapid publication and dissemination of unsolicited research papers, AIEDAM is committed to producing special issues on important, timely topics. Papers that report application of an established method to a new engineering subdomain will qualify only if they convincingly demonstrate noteworthy new power, generality or scalability in comparison with previously reported validation results. In addition to these recent advances in argumentation capture, significant progress has also been made in the capture of DR by the computational interpretation and augmentation of design sketches, and by improved computer support for simple but meaningful diagrammatic representations, in the early stages of design.

One key purpose of AIEDAM is to provide the community with a forum for publishing high quality papers that can be cited as the basis for future work, and to provide support to this community through publication, high quality reviewing, and special issues.

Use of the tool is reported to have spread from a trial of an early research prototype, largely by personal recommendation among designers who found it useful, without requiring any form of coercion.

All submissions should be made via email to the guest editors, preferably in pdf format. Please direct all enquiries and submissions to the guest editors: Papers must illustrate contributions using examples of automating and supporting knowledge intensive tasks in artifacts-centered engineering fields such as mechanical, manufacturing, architecture, civil, electrical, transportation, environmental, and chemical engineering.

The aim of this special issue on Design Rationale is to further this discussion.

Papers missing explicit representation and use of knowledge, such as those describing soft computing techniques, mathematical optimization methods, pattern recognition techniques, and numerical computation methods, do not normally qualify for publication in the Journal.

This suggests that the time may be ripe to re-examine some of the pessimistic conventional wisdom concerning DR and the viability of DR capture. However, note that all submissions for special issues go to the Guest Editors, and not to the Editor in Chief.

All submissions will be anonymously reviewed by at least two expert reviewers, and a selection for publication made on the basis of these reviews. Such a design history of the choices made, if it can be easily searched and navigated, can provide much deeper insights into both the design and the decision-making process.
